Gamba was founded in the heart of Monferrato, beginning a cooperage tradition dedicated to the production of oak barrels for wine aging that has continued for more than two centuries.

By the 1800s, the Gamba family was already producing oval and round casks, barrels and vats in its artisan workshop for customers in Italy and neighboring countries, with the craft being passed from father to son through successive generations.

Eugenio Gamba received recognition for the company's uninterrupted activity, acknowledging the continuity of the family's centuries-old cooperage tradition.

During the 1970s and 1980s, Gamba entered a major new phase with the introduction of barrique production. The company states that it was the first producer of barriques in Italy, alongside the transformation of Italian winemaking toward increasingly high-quality wines.

Production transitioned from the historic workshop to a newer facility located nearby. The original workshop remained in use for the construction of large custom-made casks.

In cooperation with Banfi and Di Zio, Gamba developed the Horizon, a new truncated-cone vat combining stainless steel and oak for wine fermentation and aging.

Gamba developed a new protocol for bending barrels using steam and water, creating the “A Vapore” barrel as an alternative approach to traditional fire bending.

Gamba began manufacturing special egg-shaped wooden tanks, expanding its range of vessels for wine production and aging.

The company introduced new products including the 500-liter Roll Fermenter and the forkliftable truncated-cone vat, expanding its solutions for fermentation and cellar operations.

Gamba reported that it had sold 300 large casks and 9,500 barrels during the previous year, increasing its customer base to approximately 1,000 clients worldwide.

Company communications identify Mauro Gamba as the seventh generation of the Gamba family to continue the historic cooperage tradition in Castell’Alfero.

Gamba reaffirmed its origins dating back to 1772 and highlighted the continuation of its centuries-old tradition, combining craftsmanship, carefully selected oak, natural wood seasoning and technological innovation while working with internationally recognized wineries.
